Thursday, July 12, 2001 The Associated Press NEWARK -- A Teaneck man was convicted Wednesday of murdering five people, dealing cocaine, robbing a Brooklyn delicatessen, and burning two houses in Jersey City on the mob's orders. Elvis Irizarry, 30, an amateur boxer who hoped to fight in the Olympics, faces a mandatory life prison term for racketeering, drug, and arson charges. Federal prosecutors said he headed a Jersey City gang that took orders from associates of the Lucchesi and Gambino crime families, killing two people in Jersey City, two in North Bergen, and one in Brooklyn between 1993 and 1997. Seven former associates who pleaded guilty testified against Irizarry at his four-week trial, testifying they often carried out his orders because they feared his temper. A jury deliberated two days before convicting him of all charges except two counts of extortion at the Brooklyn delicatessen. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Agnifilo said Irizarry was one of the mob's most popular hit men. "We thought he was one of the main go-to guys in the area," Agnifilo said. Roy Greenman, who defended Irizarry, said the verdict would be appealed on the grounds that prosecutors prejudiced the jury by charging Irizarry with 13 acts of racketeering at one trial. "The prejudicial effect of this was just enormous," Greenman said. "We essentially had to defend over 20 allegations of crimes in one trial." U.S. District Judge Nicholas H. Politan did not immediately set a sentencing date for Irizarry, who has been held without bail.
