Reputed mob associate Daniel Malatesta was indicted yesterday on conspiracy and extortion charges in what federal authorities allege was an attempt to collect a $32,000 illegal debt from a Pittsburgh area gambler.

The indictment charges that Malatesta, 32, of Clifton Heights, repeatedly threatened Vincent Carson concerning a $32,000 debt Carson had run up while betting with a Chester County bookmaking operation.

In a series of conversations secretly recorded by an investigator with the state Organized Crime Unit, Malatesta told Carson he had assumed the debt and demanded payment.

Malatesta has been described by federal authorities as an associate of reputed South Philadelphia mob figures Joseph Ligambi and George Borgesi.

In taped phone conversations and in meetings, one of which was an encounter at the King of Prussia mall, Malatesta alluded to his alleged underworld connections. He also told Carson that if he did not come up with the money, he would do things that Carson "had only seen in the movies."

Carson made a partial payment of $2,000 during an Oct. 20 meeting at the mall, according to the indictment. Malatesta was arrested Nov. 10, when he showed up at the parking lot of a hotel near the Philadelphia International Airport to collect the remainder of the debt.
