1-19-00 Louis Gatto Jr., key member of crime family, dies in jail at 51. 01/19/00
By Guy Sterling A key member of a longstanding Genovese crime family crew in New Jersey, one known for its gambling and bookmaking operations, has died while serving time in federal prison. Louis Gatto Jr., 51, of Hawthorne passed away Jan. 4 at the Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville, Pa., where officials yesterday said the cause of death was a heart attack. Sal Alfano, a lawyer who'd represented Gatto in recent months, said his client suffered from high cholesterol. Gatto had been serving a 21-month sentence on an extortion plea he entered in a New York court last summer. The allegation was that he shook down a garment industry business for a no-show job, with the help of his older brother Joseph. Alfano was his attorney in the case. Louis Gatto Jr. died not even halfway through his prison term. Both his father, reputed Genovese captain Louis "Streaky" Gatto, and brother are also serving federal prison sentences. Records show the elder Gatto -- now 83 -- is serving a 65-year racketeering and gambling sentence in the hospital at the federal correctional facility in Rochester, Minn., while Joseph Gatto, 55, is serving a five-year sentence at the federal prison in Ray Brook, N.Y.
